Nephrosplenic Entrapment (NSE)
GastrointestinalEquineNew
Key Points
  • Nephrosplenic entrapment (i.e. left dorsal displacement of the colon) occurs when the large colon becomes trapped between the spleen and the left kidney
  • Entrapment can cause an outflow obstruction, leading to gas accumulation and distension
  • Typical signs include colic, reduced borborygmi and abdominal distension
  • Diagnosis is usually via rectal exam and/or transabdominal ultrasound to identify the displacement
  • Medical management with phenylephrine and controlled exercise is usually sufficient for correction
Differential Diagnoses
  1. Gas colic
  2. Large colon volvulus
  3. Large colon impaction
  4. Right dorsal displacement of the colon
