Bovine Papular Stomatitis

  • Bovine papular stomatitis (BPS) is a mild, self-limiting disease caused by bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV)
  • It primarily affects calves <2 years old, especially after recent stress (e.g. transport, weaning)
  • Most infected animals remain bright with the main clinical sign being small, raised, red papules around the muzzle, oral mucosa and lips
  • Although BPS itself is not notifiable, vesicular or erosive lesions must be reported to the authorities until more severe diseases (e.g. FMD) have been ruled out
  • Lesions should self-resolve within 2-4 weeks so treatment is supportive care only
  • Good biosecurity and minimising stress are key to prevention
