Kennel cough (CIRDC) is a highly contagious respiratory syndrome of dogs
Caused by one or more of multiple viral and bacterial pathogens acting alone or synergistically
Viral pathogens typically initiate disease, damage the respiratory tract’s natural defences and predispose to secondary bacterial infection
Infection causes tracheobronchitis, resulting in a characteristic dry, ‘honking’ cough
Most cases are mild and self-resolve within 1-3 weeks
Diagnosis is usually presumptive, based on the clinical presentation
Supportive care and antitussives are usually sufficient for uncomplicated cases
- Antibiotics are reserved only for cases with suspected bacterial infection or systemic involvement
Vaccination and strict biosecurity measures are key for prevention
