Key Points

Right displaced abomasum (RDA) occurs when the abomasum moves dorsally and to the right, becoming trapped between the right body wall and abdominal organs
Abomasal volvulus (AV) occurs when RDA progresses and the abomasum twists on its axis, causing outflow obstruction, vascular compromise, shock and rapid death if not treated
- It is a true EMERGENCY
Most commonly seen in dairy cows in early lactation
Abomasal hypomotility, gas accumulation and postpartum anatomical changes are all central to the pathogenesis of these conditions
Diagnosis is primarily based on signalment, history and clinical presentation
Immediate surgical intervention is required, even for RDA alone due to the risk of progression to AV
- Aggressive fluid therapy and supportive care are also required
Prevention focuses on good transition cow management, maximising rumen fill in early lactation, optimising nutrition and minimising the risk of periparturient disease

Caecal dilatation ± volvulus
Peritonitis
Gastrointestinal obstruction
