Gastrointestinal obstruction is a partial or complete mechanical blockage of the gastrointestinal tract that prevents normal passage of ingesta, fluid & gas
Most commonly caused by foreign body ingestion in small animal practice
Clinical signs vary depending on the location of the blockage, but commonly include vomiting, anorexia, lethargy and abdominal discomfort
Diagnosis relies on abdominal imaging to visualise the obstruction
Stabilisation followed by removal of the obstruction are the key components of treatment
- Removal can be surgical or endoscopic
Prognosis is generally good for uncomplicated foreign body removal, but becomes guarded with intestinal necrosis, perforation or septic peritonitis
