  • Aspiration pneumonia is inflammation and infection of the lower airways caused by inhalation of material from the oropharynx of GI tract (food, water, saliva, medication, vomit)
  • It can occur in any species
  • Impaired airway protection, oesophageal dysfunction, regurgitation, vomiting or reduced consciousness can increased the risk of aspiration
  • Common clinical signs include coughing, dyspnoea, pyrexia and nasal discharge
  • Diagnosis is often presumptive, based on clinical presentation and imaging
  • Treatment focuses on antibiotics and supportive care
