Bovine Babesiosis (Redwater Disease)
Infectious DiseaseParasiteBovineNew
Key Points
  • Bovine babesiosis (“red water disease”) is a tick-borne protozoal disease caused by Babesia spp.
  • Infection results in acute haemolytic anaemia, leading to pyrexia, weakness, tachycardia and haemoglobinuria (“red water”)
    • Calves and youngstock are typically mildly affected whereas adults can develop serious disease
  • Diagnosis is typically presumptive, based on the clinical presentation, risk of tick exposure and findings on a blood smear
  • Antiprotozoals are used alongside supportive care for treatment
  • Prevention relies on good tick control to minimise exposure and intentionally exposing youngstock in endemic areas to encourage development of immunity
Differential Diagnoses
  1. Leptospirosis
  2. Bacillary haemoglobinuria
  3. Post-parturient haemoglobinuria
  4. Copper toxicity
