  • Anthrax is a notifiable, zoonotic disease, caused by Bacillus anthracis
  • It typically causes sudden death, especially ruminants
  • If a case is suspected (live or dead) it should be reported to the relevant authorities immediately
  • Do NOT attempt to open or remove carcasses as this can contaminate the environment
  • Diagnostic testing is handled by designated labs
  • Treatment is rarely possible but antibiotics may be used in early-stage cases
  • Vaccinations and strict biosecurity measures are key to prevention
