  • Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is a highly contagious viral disease that causes immunosuppression, reproductive disease, congenital abnormalities and mucosal disease in cattle
  • Infection in pregnant cows affects the foetus depending on the stage of gestation:
    • Early (0-30 days) – early embryonic death
    • Mid (30-120 days) – persistently infected (PI) animals
    • Mid-late (100-180 days) – congenital abnormalities
    • Late (>180 days) – normal but seropositive calves
  • Abortion can occur at any stage
  • PI animals are the main reservoirs of infection and continuously shed the virus
  • Mucosal disease develops only in PI animals when they become infected with a cytopathic viral strain
  • Diagnosis focuses on detecting PI animals using viral detection methods
  • There’s no effective treatment so control focuses on identifying and removing PI animals
