Equine pleuropneumonia is a severe bacterial infection of the lungs and pleural space in horses
- Also known as ‘shipping fever’ as it’s commonly associated with long-distance transport
Disease progresses from bronchopneumonia to septic pleuritis with pleural effusion, fibrin deposition and possible lung abscessation
Horses present with pyrexia, lethargy and dyspnoea initially, progressing to pain and reluctance to move once the pleura is affected
Diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation and ultrasound findings, but pleural fluid analysis is required to confirm whether an effusion is septic
A prolonged course of antibiotics and pleural drainage are key for treatment
