Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC)
Urinary & RenalFelineNew
Key Points
  • Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is a non-infectious, inflammatory bladder condition with no identifiable cause
  • It is the most common cause of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD)
  • FIC can be classed as obstructive or non-obstructive (typical FIC)
  • Multiple factors can increase the risk of FIC, including: environmental stress, abnormal stress / neuroendocrine responses and increased bladder sensitivity
  • Clinical signs include stranguria, pollakiuria, periuria and vocalisation when urinating / straining
  • It’s a diagnosis of exclusion therefore a thorough workup is required to exclude other differentials
  • Treatments include analgesia, minimising stress, anti-spasmodics and anxiolytics
  • Stress reduction is key for both treatment and prevention
Differential Diagnoses
  1. Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  2. Urolithiasis
  3. Urethral stricture
  4. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC)
  5. Behavioural periuria
