Infective Endocarditis
CardiovascularAll SpeciesNew
Key Points
  • Infective endocarditis (IE) is infection of the endocardium in the heart
    • Typically occurs on the cardiac valves
  • Can occur in any species
  • Clinical signs are generally non-specific (e.g. pyrexia, tachycardia) but can progress if secondary complications occur (CHF, embolism)
  • There is no single definitive test so diagnosis is based on clinical signs, echocardiography and laboratory findings
  • Treatment required long-term antibiotics as well as supportive care
  • Reducing bacteraemia and minimising endothelium damage are key for prevention
Differential Diagnoses
  1. Endocardiosis
  2. Myocarditis
  3. Immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA)
  4. Septic arthritis
  5. Congestive heart failure (CHF)
