Infectious DiseaseRespiratoryParasiteOvineNew
Key Points
  • Oestrosis is caused by Oestrus ovis (the sheep nasal bot fly)
  • Most commonly seen in sheep and goats
  • Adult flies deposit larvae around the nostrils of the host which migrate into the nasal cavity
  • Clinical signs include sneezing, nasal discharge, head shaking and dyspnoea in heavier burdens
  • Diagnosis is generally presumptive based on the clinical presentation
  • Anthelmintics like closantel and macrocyclic lactones are used to target different larval stages
  • Reducing fly exposure is key for prevention
Differential Diagnoses

  2. Bacterial rhinitis
  3. Parainfluenza-3
