Scrapie
NeurologyCaprineOvineNew
Key Points
  • Scrapie is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats caused by prions
  • It is NOTIFIABLE and suspected cases must be reported to the relevant authorities
  • There are two main forms:
    • Classical scrapie is typically transmissible within the flock and causes pruritus and progressive neurodegeneration
    • Atypical scrapie is generally sporadic, usually in older animals and doesn’t seem to be contagious
  • There is no treatment so control focuses on breeding genetically resistant animals, good surveillance and biosecurity
  • Prions are incredibly stable in the environment, making eradication difficult
Differential Diagnoses
  1. Listeriosis
  2. Polioencephalomalacia
  3. Coenurosis (gid)
  4. Ectoparasites (mites, lice)
