  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital cardiovascular defect where the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth
  • This results in abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery
  • One of the most common congenital cardiac defects in dogs
    • Toy and small breeds are predisposed
  • The classic clinical findings is a continuous “machinery” murmur at the left heart base
  • Echocardiography is the diagnostic test of choice
  • Definitive treatment is closure of the defect via surgery or transcatheter occlusion
  • Right-left shunts should NOT be occluded as this can lead to acute right-sided heart failure
  • Early detection and closure give an excellent prognosis
