1º Atrioventricular Block

  • 1º atrioventricular block (AVBs) is a cardiac conduction abnormality, defined by a delay in conduction through the atrioventricular node (AVN)
  • Most cases are asymptomatic and due to high vagal tone but some may be associated with pathologies
    • Physiological 1º AVB is caused by a high vagal tone and resolves with sympathetic stimulation
    • Pathological causes include cardiomyopathies, electrolyte imbalances, hypothyroidism and drugs
  • Diagnosis is confirmed with ECG
  • Treatment is generally unnecessary, unless the block is symptomatic, pathological or progressive
  • Reassessment is recommended if the patient is symptomatic, has suspected underlying disease or evidence of progression to a clinically significant block
